Asiedu Nketia must resign immediately – NMC Chair Ayeboafo

Johnson Asiedu Nketia, the recently elected chairman of the National Democratic Commission (NDC), has been urged by the chairman of the National Media Commission (NMC), Yaw Boadu Ayeboafo, to resign from his position on the board of the Parliamentary Service.

A political party head, according to him, cannot maintain the position’s strictest level of neutrality.

Asiedu Nketia has been a member of the board since 2021 and was elected NDC National Chairman over the weekend, defeating incumbent Samuel Ofosu Ampofo.

He and former New Patriotic Party (NPP) legislator Abraham Ossei Aidoo were selected as the Speaker of Parliament’s nominees for the Board.

The Speaker serves as the chair, and the members are the Majority Leader, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, Minority Leader Haruna Iddrisu, and Clerk of Parliament, Cyril Nsiah.

However, Mr. Ayeboafo asserts that it is unlawful for a political party leader to advise the Speaker in this case.

He mentioned the case of the late Peter Ala Adjetey, who was dismissed from the Commission due to his position as NPP National Chairman.

The constitution was changed, according to the former Editor-in-Chief of the official publication Daily Graphic, to ensure that Mr. Ala Adjetey would not continue serving as a member of the Commission.

“So, if somebody holding political office cannot be a member of the Commission, how can somebody leading a political party advise the Speaker which is supposed to demonstrate objectively and neutrality of the highest sense?”
