A senior medical expert who doubles as the Chief executive officer for Profecy scientific herbal clinic, Noble Dr. Elijah Mensah Bonsu has indicated that majority of Ghanaians are battling with mental illness (bipolar disorder) due to poverty and untold hardship.
Dr. Mensah Bonsu speaking to greater Accra Correspondent of National times News paper urged Stakeholders to find pragmatic and effective approach to deal with Bipolar Disorder and uphold international best practices to help dwindle the predicament of mental illness in the country.
Giving some examples of Ghanaian celebrities with Bipolar Disorder, Dr. Bonsu revealed that managing bipolar disorder can be abit challenging due to its chronicity and relapse during treatment.
He further stated that inadequate access to quality care, lack of compliance to treatment protocols, society stigma, negative religious interference and failure to deal with the ailments triggers as causes that may fuel the risk factors initiating the episodes.
He recommended a combination of therapies in addressing the physical, mental, social and spiritual needs of sufferers.
He also admonished the populace to eschew the character of stigmatisation but rather help those suffering from the disease to gain their mental stability.
