President John Dramani Mahama resumes a campaign tour of the Ashanti region and this according to reports gathered will be the second phase of the tour after the first phase took him to the northern regions of Ghana.
Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2020 general elections, John Dramani Mahama has commenced his ‘Thank You’ tour in the Ashanti, Ahafo, and Bono Regions and his next spot will be the world bank of the National Democratic Congress.
The former president is embarking on this tour to thank supporters of the opposition NDC who voted massively for him in the last General elections.
Per the itinerary, the youngest Former president will be meeting religious and traditional leaders, engage members, supporters, and sympathizers of the NDC, and also interact with the media.
Ahead of the former president’s visit to the home region of the NDC, some concerned youths of the volta region are pledging the election of the branch executives, not selection.
A couple of days ago, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, NDC’s standard-bearer in the last general elections was reported to have declared during a ‘Thank You’ tour of the Eastern Region that NDC party machinery shall “come to the branches to organize elections there,” and that “it will be branch election and not selection.” This is welcome news to many of us, youthful supporters of the NDC in the Volta Region, and across Ghana, part of their statements added.
Joining him on the tour are his 2020 running mate, Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, former Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, Joshua Hamidu Akamba, national, regional, and constituency executives of the NDC, and some former appointees.

CONCERNED YOUTHS OF VOLTA REGION WELCOME H.E. JOHN MAHAMA’S PLEDGE TO ENSURE BRANCH ELECTIONS BUT NOT BRANCH SELECTIONS IN NDC
A couple of days ago, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, NDC’s standard-bearer in the last general elections was reported to have declared during a ‘Thank You’ tour of the Eastern Region that NDC party machinery shall “come to the branches to organize elections there,” and that “it will be branch election and not selection.” This is welcome news to many of us, youthful supporters of the NDC in the Volta Region, and across Ghana.
We are particularly excited about the declaration by H.E. John Mahama not only because we trust him, and what he has declared shall go a long way to boost our confidence in the party and give us a real opportunity to work our hearts out for the party for victory in the 2024 general elections if it is fully implemented. We are even more excited because hitherto, our beloved NDC has not been organized properly at the branches. Proper elections are never held, and many of us are alienated from mainstream party activities at any level of the party. We are never educated on how we can register to become members of the party and participate in its internal elections. This is our plight, which may change if JM’s declaration shall be fully implemented.
The decision to conduct and supervise proper elections at the branches shall undoubtedly make the party very attractive to the youth again, and especially, to those of our colleagues who are leaving the party and joining NPP and other political parties mainly because of their inability to participate in the decision making of the party at any level.
But much as we welcome JM’s declaration, and see it as a panacea for the many difficulties facing our party at the branches, it is important to also draw the attention of leadership to the fact that the conduct of proper branch elections shall serve as a useful purpose for the party only if the elections are held at the appropriate time, which is a time preceding the elections of executives at all other levels of the party, namely, constituency, regional, and national elections.
Recently, we heard about a proposal to amend the party’s constitution to allow for the election of the new constituency, regional, and national executives before electing new branch executives. We think this proposal shall be counterproductive for the party if it is implemented, and it shall lead to disaffection among our rank and file. This proposal, if implemented, shall exclude the influence of a rejuvenated base (branches) in the election of the new executives of the party who shall run the party at all levels from the constituency to national.
We accordingly reject this proposal outrightly, and we call on the Constitution Review Committee to discard the idea totally. All of us want to play roles in electing our new executives from the constituency to national, and that opportunity must not be denied through an amendment of the party’s constitution.
On the way forward, we have read another proposal put forth by a lawyer, and an ardent activist of the party, Mr. Eric Delanyo Alifo who has recommended to the party to form a five-member committee for each constituency including the director of elections of the constituency; representatives of national; region; legal directorate; and a former appointee from the constituency to organize the branch elections in all the constituencies. We have read the lawyer’s proposal carefully, and we find it very reasonable and worthy. We think it shall be very helpful for the party, and so we support it in absolute terms and endorse it for serious consideration by the leadership of the party.
We wish to pledge our unalloyed support to H.E. John Mahama, his declaration, and the NDC. We urge the leadership of the party to respond positively to our call on them to organize all branch elections well, and first, before constituency regional, and national elections. If these are done, we shall go the extra mile to ensure that our beloved party returns to power in 2025.
Long live John Mahama
Long live NDC.
